Simon Callery
Since Simon Callerys’ solo show at the TATE in 1997 he has continued to try and slow down the way we look at paintings in order to allow a genuine experience to occur. Such an experimental approach to painting and the temporality of experience remains central to him, inspiring a startling series of new paintings which are beautifully perceived, sensed and experienced as much physically as conceptually. Tracey Chevelier has commented of Simons work that ‘ they require more time than we are used to giving things in this fast world..the painting makes me aware of my own rhythm..it makes us conscious of ourselves’.
